Trinity College Old Boy Dr. Robert Grant Sourjah has passed away on 1st October 2020 in Sydney, Australia. He was 95 years when he departed this life. It is a great loss to lose such a talented sportsperson and a skillful doctor.

He was born on 10th September 1925 in Kathankudi and was blessed with two sisters and one brother. They lost their father due to Thyroid before attending Trinity College Kandy. Yet, their mother wanted to give them the finest education, and Robert and his brother were admitted to Trinity College Kandy.

He was a legendary character and he is famous for his outstanding performance in Rugger. Dr. Robert Grant Sourjah was the captain of the Trinity Rugby Team of Trinity College and was the first Bradby Captain who won the Bradby Shield in 1945. He did well in his studies as well. After leaving Trinity College premises, he entered medical college and obtained the degree.

He was a very famous physician in Colombo and served in many cities in Sri Lanka. In addition to Sri Lanka, he served the UK and in Saudi Arabia.

Dr. Robert never stopped playing Rugger even after leaving school. He played for the University Club as well as Havelocks Sports Club.

He got married to a lady called Inez and they were blessed with two sons named Rohan and Lalin. They were also blessed with skills and became exeptionally talented Sportspersons. The Rugger XV which took place in 1975 was led by Rohan’s captaincy. And Lalin was the captain of the Athletics team in 1979.

Dr. Robert was the first lion in Trinity College Kandy. His sons, both Rohan and Lalin went in the same pathway that their father went and both of them were awarded Lions.

Dr. Robert was also elected as the President of the Trinity College OBA once.

It is a real tragedy to lose such a talented Sports Person and a brilliant Physician. We express our deepest sympathies to Dr. Robert’s wife and may his soul rest in eternal peace.

Dr. Souja
