Failed your exam? This is a common myth in the society that the exam results are the key factor that decides the whole future of a child. I wonder how on earth these smart people do not understand how unfair and lame it is… so just because that student gets a failing grade in the exam means that he or she is a dumb and talentless child? But unfortunately, this is how our prestigious society labels them. Not everyone, but this is how the majority thinks. Wake up, people! This is the 21st century for God’s sake!
Here are some points that will help to change that mindset.
Thomas Edison
There’s no single human being who does not know the person who invented the light bulb. If not for him we will live with candlelight. And today we have different light bulbs from different sizes and colors starting from LED lights. This great man is the world-famous Thomas Edison. Even though he managed to hold more than 10,000 patents, he was neglected by his teachers saying that he is “too stupid to learn anything”. If he took those words and kept crying for grades we will not have these Nobel Prize-winning products. And that is just a blast from the past…

Steve Jobs
If we talk about the recent present we have one of the richest entrepreneurs, Steve Jobs who introduced Apple mobile devices to the world. He failed in exams and dropped College when he was 17 and he was inspired to develop this new invention when he was sleeping on one of his friend’s dorm room’s floor. And today his net worth is USD 10.2 billion. This is another man who did not plan his future on his grades.
Those are some world-famous characters. But there are plenty of Sri Lankan entrepreneurs as well who has failed in exams but own the most luxurious vehicles and homes like mansions.
The founder of Maliban Biscuits, founder of Nawaloka Group of Companies, are some successful businessmen who couldn’t even have a proper education.
It is good if you have got brains otherwise we won’t be having advanced technologies like artificial intelligence or gene therapy. But not all are meant to be the same. Suppose you get failing grades. So what? Does that mean that you have to end up studying and run away? NO! There are many other potential avenues you can try out. Even though you can’t score 90s in your exams you might have the talent to do breathtaking paintings. You can be talented to dance like a world-famous ballerina. You might have got the brains to tear a motorbike and build up a new machine.
We have different talents and skills. All you need to do is find your true passion. If everyone relied on grades, then we will never have new implementations. You are a unique character and that is why the world is this beautiful. So all I’m saying do not to decide your future on your exam results.
Don’t take this the wrong way. I am not suggesting you not to study at all. What I’m saying is your future does not depend on your grades. But suppose you studied well but did not get good results… it’s totally fine… there are plenty of other opportunities waiting for you.
Just remember it’s not the end of an era. You can create a new era on your own… all you want is to believe in yourself…
