What is Aeronautical Engineering?
You will take a wide-ranging curriculum that includes courses in aeronautical engineering, mathematics, electronics, materials, statics, fluid mechanics, dynamics, thermodynamics, composite materials, aeroelasticity, high-speed aerodynamics, fluid dynamics, flight dynamics and control theory and engineering skills, supported by individual and group project work and laboratory work.
You’ll take part in practical laboratories, including running a jet engine test, and a flight-testing course in a Jetstream aircraft during year 5 of the MEng.
An Aerospace/Aeronautical engineer researches, designs, develops, maintains, and tests the performance of:
- Civil and Military aircraft
- Missiles
- Weapons systems
- Satellites
- Space vehicles
What do you learn?
Once you learn about the design of an aircraft, you will begin to analyze and understand aircraft behavior, aircraft performance, and propulsion systems, and you will begin to perform a detailed analysis of aircraft structural components.
You’ll be concerned with improving flight safety, fuel efficiency, speed, and weight, as well as reducing system costs and using advancing technologies to meet customer needs. Increasingly, the role addresses the environmental impact of air travel.
Students are encouraged to do internship and project work in R&D laboratories, industries, and premier educational institutions like NAL, ADE, HAL, Bosch, IISc, and IITs.
You can specialize in a particular area such as:
- Aerodynamics
- Avionics
- Propulsion
- Materials and structures
- Systems integration
Career Opportunities
A person who has studied Aeronautical engineering can pursue the following career options
- Aeronautical engineer
- Aerospace system engineer
- Mechanical engineer
- Design engineer
- Robotics engineer
- Aerodynamics engineer
- Engineering consultant
In general, an aeronautical engineer earns an average of around USD 80,000 annually. A student after completing this program can find jobs both in the government and private sector. There are plenty of avenues in aircraft manufacturing and design and production companies.
Postgraduate Opportunities
A graduate can choose one of the following to continue the studies
- M.Sc. in Aeronautical engineering in University of Limerick Ireland
- Master of Science in Aeronautics in Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, USA
- Advanced Master Air navigation systems & operations in ENAC France
- Ph.D. in Advanced fault diagnosis for aircraft fuel systems in Cranfield University, UK
- M.Sc. in Aeronautical Engineering in University of Limerick science & engineering Ireland
If you like to work with aircraft and a related field to it, then this degree suits you well.
