Kingswood College, a leading boys' school in Kandy, Sri Lanka produce highly talented Kingswoodians in both sports as well as academic studies.

The gentlemen of Kingswood are well-balanced individuals who have a sound academic legacy surrounded by rich and glorious sporting achievements. Kingswood has always been a major sporting institution in Sri Lanka that has produced notable national and international athletes. Through their dedication and talent, they brought local and overseas fame to the mother Kingswood. We invite you to immerse in the sporting heritage of Kingswood and discover its superior gentlemen.

Athletics

The athletes of Kingswood have been winning many major tournaments since 1986 while bringing glory and fame to the college. The year 2014 was significant for our athletes as many of its gentlemen could participate in the Kandy zonal athletics meet. The junior athletics team represented the school at zonal, provincial, and all-island levels by winning many awards and accolades.

Our gentleman, Binura Herath was the all-island champion and won the prestigious “Best Athlete” award in the year 2014. He was considered one of the best school athletes at that time. D.R Wedikkara, another gentleman of Kingswood was the provincial track and field champion recently. Two of our athletes were included in the provincial athletics team created by the zonal sports center of the central province.

Cricket

The game of the gentlemen has a long and illustrious history in the Kingswood arena. The “Battle of the Maroons”, the 110 years old annual cricket encounter between Kingswood and Dharmaraja College, takes its pride as the oldest cricketing encounter in the central province. It has brought numerous accolades to the college and has produced some outstanding cricketers both locally and internationally.

The Kingswood cricket team has proved its dominance by beating some fellow school teams recently. Under the captain Supun Bandara, they beat St Mary’s college, Maliyadewa college, and Sri Sumangala college by innings. Coached by Mr.Rohan Raj Perera, the team continues to make their presence as a quality and talented cricket team in the country.



Boxing

The boxers of Kingswood have announced themselves as a talented bunch of fighters by winning some provincial and all-island tournaments. In the year of 2014, the gentleman Shamil Rocheal was able to win the silver medal at the L.V Jayaweera memorial boxing championship. Another gentleman, Tharindu Madushanka won the Gold medal in the annual Clifford cup and was the best loser. Lasith Dissanayaka, the perhaps most celebrated boxer in the school, was the Super Aghror finalist in 2014. Moreover, three of our gentlemen erupted as the winners of the T.B Jaya memorial boxing tournament. Also, three of our junior boxers participated in the junior national boxing tournament in Kandy.

Chess

The noble game of chess has helped the gentlemen of Kingswood to achieve academic excellence and logical thinking. It was introduced to the school in 1991. Since then, the game has brought many victories and awards to the school. Recently, the gentleman B.N Thawalampola and K.G.M Bandara were adjusted as all-island champions in the under 19 category. M.B Thennakoon represented Sri Lanka at the Asian school chess championship in Thailand. Many other gentlemen of Kingswood brought honor to the college by winning major local and international chess tournaments.

Table Tennis

The Kingswood college is equipped with a professional table tennis arena with modern facilities making it the city hub for top-notch table tennis competitions. The sport has brought fame to the college by producing some of the outstanding players throughout the years. The two gentlemen of Kingswood, Dhanushka Wijesingha and Chandupa Alahakoon was placed 1st and 2nd respectively at the all-island rankings. Also, our junior table tennis team emerged as the winners in the provincial TT tournament. The college pays its tribute to the coach, Mr. A. Wijerathna for his dedication and sacrifice for the sport.

Rugby

The most celebrated sport in the Kingswood arena. Our school was a pioneer in introducing the sport to the schools in Sri Lanka. Rugby was introduced to Kingswood in the year 1891 by the founder L.E Blaze himself. The first match was played in the same year as an inter-house event. Since then, our rugger tiers have been going from strength to strength glorifying the name of Kingswood in Sri Lanka and beyond.

The gentleman of Kingswood, Chamara Withanage the captain of the rugger team in the year 2003, won the prestigious president trophy. In the year 2004 our team snatched the Golden Key rugby 7’s title and could win the Singer 7’s championship in the same year. Year by year Kingswood’s junior and senior teams won many major all-island tournaments making the name Kingswood a force to be reckoned in the rugger arena.

Kingswood is proud to produce some outstanding rugger tiers who could represent Sri Lankan national rugby team. The most notable athlete was Fazil Marija, who later became the national captain of Sri Lanka. Apart from him, the gentlemen Chathura Rathnayake and Kosala Nuwan Perera earned the golden opportunity of representing Sri Lanka at the international level. They hoisted the mother Kingswood’s name to the international level bringing joy and fame to their alma mater. Today, Kingswood rugby makes their presence as a forefront rugby school in Sri Lanka that produces quality rugger tiers to the country.




Hockey

One of the most talented teams in the Kingswood arena, our hockey team has been featured in numerous completions and tournaments throughout the country. Our gentlemen represented the school both locally and internationally by featuring in the Sri Lankan hockey team of the year in 2014. At the blue and gold hockey tournament, organized by the Royal College Colombo we won the shield and emerged as the overall champions. Our junior team was also able to win some major inter-school competitions performing brilliantly.

Swimming

Equipped with a state of art swimming pool, the swimmers of Kingswood have been glorifying the name of Kingswood ever since its inception in 2002. In the Sri Lanka novices championship, two of our gentlemen could win the prestigious 1st and 2nd places respectively. Also, the gentleman, Y.C Weerathungaarachchi became the champion of the Janka Bandara Thennakoon Challenge Trophy in 2015. Moreover, swimmers of Kingswood were featured in the Central Province swimming team for their outstanding performances.

Karate

The action-packed game of Karate is a popular sport among the gentlemen of Kingswood. It has produced some outstanding personalities with a solid mindset. Karate was introduced to the school in 1988 by the coach Mr. Anura Zoyza. Our school won the National school Karate championship in the year 2016. Two gentlemen, A.R.K Aththanayaka and B.S Kodikara were able to win places at the Karate-Do federation. Kingswood would like to pay gratitude to its long-time running coach, Mr. Anura Zoyza for his tireless contribution to the sport.

Basketball

It was an idea of the late principal Mr. Ranjith Chandrasekara, to bring this fascinating sport to the Kingswood arena. Thus, it has contributed to the development of the gentlemen and brought immense fame to the college. Our under 19 team was unstoppable in the year 2014 as they won the all-island basketball tournament on high. Four of them were featured in the all-island basketball team. Also, they won the annual Ranjith Chandrasekara challenge trophy beating the Trinity College Kandy. Our players continue to shine the name of Kingswood by performing par excellence.
