AL-Azhar National School has seamlessly proved well in the Academic related activities in the Mawanella Zone
Al-Azhar National School is one of the outstanding schools in the Mawanella zone. It has never failed to prove better in academic activities. A well-experienced panel of teachers and a well-resourced environment that prevails at the school pave the way to perform better in all the academic activities every year.
Achievements of the past century
Firstly, in the year 1969 after the Advanced Level classes were introduced 4 Arts students from our school got selected to the university. They are, Ms.M.S. S Fawziya, Ms.M.A. S Nazeera, and Ms. Fawzun Nayeema. It was the first academic achievement made in the history of the school. Thereafter, in the year 1995, a girl named Ms.M.H. N Nazmiya got entrance to the medical faculty for the first time. The next year Mr. Nuzair got selected to the medical faculty while Mr.M.M.M Mahfar got entrance to the Engineering faculty. In the same year, 3 other students got the opportunity to follow physical science courses,2 students for unani medicine and, 2 others for NDT course offered by the Morrotuwa University of Sri Lanka.
The year 1994 was the first year in which the highest percentage of students got passed in the year 5 scholarship examinations. Out of 28 students who sat for the exam,8 students succeeded in scoring high marks.
Accomplishments of the early 21st century
The bilingual classes were started in the year 2003, and in the first attempt itself, a girl named M.R Azeeza secured 10A passes for the Ordinary Level examinations. In 2007, first time in Al-Azhar history the highest number of students got passed the year 5 scholarship examinations. It is a pride for me that I am one of them and has performed something to make a memorable record in the history of our mother Azhar.
In 2010,84% of students passed Ordinary level examinations and in 2012, our school was ranked as the first in the Mawanella zone. The Advanced Level results of the students have taken a sudden increase in the same year and have reached up to a percentage of 93%. The year 2013, was another remarkable year in the history of mother Azhar as 07 students have passed the Ordinary Level Examinations with 9A passes. That was an eminent performance in the history of the school. Mr.M.A.M Nisthar who was the principal during that period is solely responsible for all these achievements. His continuous effort to make the school one of the best in the zone is the only reason for all these successes.
The “Pradeepa Prabha” award, which is given for excellent teachers all over the island was awarded to four teachers including the principal Mr.M.A.M Nisthar. Moreover, in 2010, in an ICT competition, the school won the National ICT Excellent Award for securing first place in the Province and fifth place at the National level. And for this, the school was provided with technological equipment worth nearly 2.3 million.

Advanced Level in AL-Azhar National School
When considering the Advanced Level results of the Al-Azhar National School, it is quite evident that till this point the students have never felt tired to show their best in the examination. And, especially it has to be said that the technology stream students have shown their extraordinary performance in the exams. The year 2016 is memorable in the history of the school. A girl named Ms.M. I Hafsa, who followed the Biosystems Technology stream was ranked as third in the Sabaragamuwa Province. Furthermore, out of 24 students who followed the Bio Systems Technology stream, all the 24 students obtained the chance to continue their higher studies in government institutes. And, the teachers of the Technology stream were ahonoredured by providing an award called “Prabashwara” in the year 2019 for their continuous support in producing best results in the Technology stream every year in the Mawanella zone.
The streams like Arts, Commerce, Bioscience and physical science are also given prominence and the highest number of students get the opportunity to enter the university or to any government institute every year.
